The Almighty Lie
Lies have been around for as long as man has. More precisely they’ve been around since humans began to interact with each other. Homo sapiens have such a propensity for lying to one another that the Christ called us children of the god of lies.
I think the proper question isn’t when did lies become acceptable. More precisely it should be when weren’t they? It’s been going on since the beginning. and not only that it comes naturally. Don’t believe me? Check it out.
Lies Children Tell at Play
Christ wasn’t wrong. People start with a tendency to hide the truth in order to avoid trouble. It starts so early. If two children are at play and one breaks moms favorite vase, the child’s inclination is to deny having been involved.
That’s right a child’s natural tendency is to lie when faced with trouble. We as humans literally have to be taught to tell the truth. Evidently, it is a learned skill and an acquired taste.
Let’s Talk Semantics For a Moment
So what in the world are lies and how can they affect me? That depends totally on what part you play in the formula. That’s right there’s a formula. A Lie is a curious creature, however, in that it needs to be maintained and serviced.
The danger is even the smallest of white lies can become the creature from the black lagoon, causing mayhem and destruction in the lives of all concerned.
If you are a liar (The person telling the lie) then you’re using words to deceive someone. The interesting thing to remember is a lot of the time the words used to tell a lie are the same words one would use, to tell the truth. Quite often it’s more a matter of how you say something that is the mechanism of deception.
As a matter of fact, there are different kinds of lies that can be used in appropriate situations. The lie can quite literally be tailored to the occasion.
The Many Faces of a Lie
So what are the ways a lie can be told? That’s a very good question and I’m glad I asked it.
lies to others
The Bald Faced Lie – This is when the liar makes a statement that has no possible foundation in fact. The teller of this little tale doesn’t care if you believe them or not.
The Sin of Omission – This is when you tell part of the truth but leave out a key element.
The admission of guilt- Here you admit to your accuser that you are guilty of what you are accused of. The twist is that you do it in a way that makes it sound ridiculous. (This is a favorite of teenagers)
The False Accusation- This little nugget is the most common and is in use every day all around the world. It is just what the name implies. You accuse someone of something they didn’t do. If the accusation is heinous enough it might even ruin their life.
The white lie – The white lie is the most innocent of deceptions. Most of the time this type of lie is done to protect someone from something. Always remember charity begins at home.
Lies to self
Self Talk – I like these lies. I’ve been telling them to myself for as long as I can remember. You know the ones. “I’m not pretty enough.” “I don’t deserve to have a life of abundance.” “I need to change myself to be perfect like all the other girls.” These lies are born of doubt.
Denial- Here we are trying to convince ourselves that we don’t feel what we really do feel. This is a really messed up kind of lie and I hate it. That is the truth about how I feel.
Lies, Ethics, and Morality
Lies certainly do seem to conflict with the standards of ethical practice. They conflict heavily with the harbingers of morality. So I suppose we should ask the question. Is it wrong to lie? Some would say yes. In her book “Opening love: Intentional Relationships & The Evolution of Consciousness” Dr. Anya light. Indicates that we are taught lies from our tribe.
I don’t know about you, but that kind of pisses me off. So At least that kind of lie must be wrong, but are all lies unethical? Are all lies immoral? Doesn’t the Bible tell us not to lie?
Actually, the answer to that is no. The Bible doesn’t tell us not to lie, it tells us not to bear false witness against our neighbor. Some people want you to read all lies into that commandment but I assure you it’s not there.
So as with all things whether or not you should lie is up to you. Is it right? Is it wrong? Once again you must decide these things for yourself. But, if you want my advice, and I’m sure you do, I say if a lie will save your loved ones from heartache or keep your ass out of jail, Lie! Lie like a fucking dog if you have to,
but before you do
know what you’re doing!
